The Forgotten Ones: Rescuing and Rehabilitating Donkeys at Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue

At Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue, we are on a mission to shed light on the plight of donkeys, the forgotten ones in the world of animal rescue. When people ask, "Donkeys need rescuing? YES," we answer with a resounding affirmation. Why donkeys, you ask? Because they are the forgotten ones, the silent sufferers who endure unimaginable abuse and neglect.

Contrary to popular belief, donkeys are not just livestock; they are sentient beings with hearts full of love and personalities as unique as any beloved pet. Yet, many are unaware of the hardships these gentle creatures face. We are often met with incredulous questions: "What is a donkey good for? What do they do for you?" Our response is simple: does everything in life have to serve you to matter?

The sad truth is that donkeys are among the most abused animals in the world, often falling victim to the cruel auction/kill pen industry and enduring neglect in the public eye. This is why they need rescuing. They need a voice, a chance at a life free from suffering.

Donkeys, in our eyes, are like giant puppies – loving, full of personality, and a joy to be around. The thought of them being subjected to such cruelty with little help available makes us deeply disheartened. The atrocities inflicted upon donkeys by humans often leave us feeling ashamed. They need our help, and we are here to provide it.

While most horse rescues may take in a donkey or two, they often shy away from the worst cases of abuse, neglect, or behavioral issues. This leaves the forgotten ones in dire need of assistance. At Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue, we step in to help those who need it the most – the severely abused, neglected, and unwanted donkeys.

Meet ELMER, JUDY, ALEX, PIPER, JUNEBUG, KAY, BILLY, CHELSEA, ORVILLE, HERMAN, GLEN, FRED, NEIL, and many more. These are the forgotten ones, the ones society has turned its back on. Severely abused, with neglected hooves, starved and weak bodies, betrayed by humans, and not even wanted by most rescues. These are the donkeys we seek. These are the donkeys we transform.

The transformations we witness are not fast, nor are they cheap, but they are undeniably remarkable. We do not just rescue dogs, cats, or other animals; our primary focus is on donkeys. They are not second to any other animal here – they are our priority.

The misconception that donkeys are merely livestock needs to change. They are not commodities for food, milk, or eggs. They are sentient beings with kind hearts and friendly dispositions. The question, "What are donkeys used for?" is one that quickens our pulse and elicits a look of anger. Why must everything serve people? Why do some believe that if an animal or object does not benefit them, it is worthless? We challenge this notion and advocate for the inherent value of all living beings.

Rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming donkeys while educating the public is an arduous task. It requires constant fundraising to cover expenses, relentless work with little assistance, and minimal free time. It is exhausting. Yet, in those moments when a donkey approaches for kisses, or when one learns to trust humans for the first time, tears of joy flow. These are the moments that make it all worthwhile. These are the moments that affirm our impact on these animals' lives.

At Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the forgotten ones. We take in the most undesirable donkeys, those whom others might advocate euthanizing, and we transform them into healthy, happy beings who revel in human interaction. This is our purpose, our passion, and our commitment to the forgotten ones. This is Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue.
