Healing Emotional Trauma - How We Supported a Donkey's Emotional Recovery

At Peaceful Pastures Donkey Rescue, we believe that every donkey deserves a chance at a peaceful and happy life. Many of the donkeys that come into our care have experienced unimaginable abuse and neglect, leaving them with deep emotional scars. In this blog post, we want to share with you how we provide the necessary support and care to help these donkeys heal from their emotional trauma.

Understanding Emotional Trauma in Donkeys:

Donkeys, like humans, can experience emotional trauma as a result of abuse, neglect, or other distressing experiences. This trauma can manifest in various ways, such as fear, anxiety, aggression, or withdrawal. Recognizing these signs is crucial in providing the right kind of care and support.

Creating a Safe and Nurturing Environment:

One of the first steps we take in supporting a donkey's emotional recovery is creating a safe and nurturing environment. Our dedicated team ensures that each donkey has access to a spacious and peaceful pasture, away from any potential triggers or stressors. We prioritize their physical and emotional well-being, providing them with nutritious food, clean water, and comfortable shelter.

Building Trust and Establishing Bonds:

Building trust is essential in helping a traumatized donkey heal emotionally. Our team spends quality time with each donkey, patiently earning their trust through gentle interactions and consistent care. We tailor our approach to each donkey's unique needs, allowing them to progress at their own pace.

Therapeutic Interventions:

To support emotional healing, we incorporate various therapeutic interventions into our donkey rehabilitation program. These interventions may include equine-assisted therapy, where donkeys interact with trained personnel to promote emotional well-being. Additionally, we provide enrichment activities, such as grooming sessions, gentle massages, and interactive play, to help donkeys regain their confidence and trust in humans.

Success Stories:

We are proud to share heartwarming success stories of donkeys who have overcome their emotional trauma and found loving forever homes.

Let's look at Roxy's story

Roxy was an auction save from Springfield, MO. She had matted hair and was not just unhandled, but wild. She was the most challenging donkey to tame down. She wanted to kick, bite, and attack humans. Who knows what she experienced in the past.

Over time, persistence and love allowed me to gain her trust. I was able to comb and cut all those knots out of her hair.

However, she had moments where she would get wild again. If I had a rough day at work and came home nervous, angry, or anything out of sorts, Roxy acted different. She may try to knock me down, kick me or bite my leg. I did not allow visitors in with her for months while we kept working on her behavior.

Over time, she got used to human mood changes and how a change in emotion did not mean she would be treated differently. I truly believe that donkeys know us better than we do. They read us and act according to what they feel is safest for them. Roxy couldn't understand my emotions and had to learn that my negative emotions did not pose her danger.

After a few months, Roxy became the most friendly, loving donkey in the field. She laid her head on my chest for nose kisses and pets. She did fantastic when introduced to others.

One day a lady from Iowa came to adopt 2 donkeys. Roxy stayed with her the whole time. Turns out the lady's name was Roxanne, and she was laid back, sweet and bonded with Roxy. I was a little nervous as Roxy's only time away from me was at the vet and she was not that nice to them. Was Roxy ready?

Roxanne wanted to give Roxy a try, and I am so thankful she did! Roxy is living her best life ever now. She loves to get brushed and loves her people time. She was adopted out with a younger little girl who was sweet and came from a group of 6 weanlings and a mom/baby pair at a kill pen. They are living a donkey dream life now. 💗
